This new KLIX Eco Cup is a breakthrough in in-cup vending that is biodegradable and recyclable with normal paper waste

Finland’s Kotkamills, a manufacturer of fully recyclable barrier boards, has announced that it has signed a collaboration agreement with Lavazza Professional. Subsequently, Lavazza Professional has unveiled the new ‘KLIX Eco Cup’, a special Kotkamills’ eco-friendly cup made from ISLA food service board, which will be available from this month in its KLIX in-cup vending machines.

“We are pleased about the collaboration with Lavazza Professional,” enthused Kotkamills CEO Markku Hämäläinen, who will be one of more than 130 people delivering a presentation at Plastic Free World Conference & Expo 2020 in June. “They are ambitiously striving to implement a model of sustainability that responds to the challenge of reducing plastic in the next couple of years. This kind of collaboration partner is ideal for us.”

The barrier property of the Kotkamills’ food service board is based on a water-based dispersion coating, which eliminates the need for a separate polyethylene (PE) coating. Therefore, the cups do not have to be processed at a recycling plant – instead, they are recyclable with normal paper waste, like office paper.

In other Kotkamills-related news, the company has announced a tie-up with Norwich City Football Club, which plays in the English Premier League. Teemu Pukki, a forward on the Finnish national team, plays for the ‘Canaries’, who have announced that they will replace single-use plastic cups with the eco-friendlier alternatives starting next season. “In the UK, an active discussion on restrictions and legislative actions reducing the use of single-use plastics is ongoing,” Hämäläinen explained. “It is great to have partners who are moving toward a more sustainable era by using recyclable fiber-based products instead of single-use plastics.”

Plastic Free World Conference & Expo 2020 will take place at Cologne Messe, Germany, on Tuesday 16 June and Wednesday 17 June. To register for this highly focused, solutions-driven event, please click here. For sponsorship and exhibition opportunities, please email peter@trans-globalevents.com
