Press Release: APM Automotive Performance Material

Expert lineup of sustainable materials suppliers to demonstrate greener plastics at Plastic Free World Conference & Expo 2019

A late but very welcome addition to the Plastic Free World Conference & Expo 2019 speaker lineup is Jean-Marie Bourgeois-Jacquet, business development manager at APM Automotive Performance Materials, a leading global automotive supplier.

Speaking in the Automotive & Transportation stream, Bourgeois-Jacquet will be focusing on NAFILean, a polypropylene compound that features 20% of hemp fibers and is ideally suited for automotive structural parts. The material ticks the box in terms of weight reduction, performance, safety and sustainability and is yet another signal of the auto sector’s continuing interest in hemp as a replacement for traditional fossil fuel-based plastics.

NAFILean has already been successfully incorporated into the door panels of PSA Peugeot-Citroën’s 2013 308 production vehicle. The 1.2kg of the material delivered a 25% weight reduction and a 25% environmental impact reduction, figures validated through an ISO 14040-44* Norm ‘Life Cycle Assessment’ covering the material’s production, use and end of life. It was subsequently utilized in the dashboard of the high-end 508 model. This facilitates a 1kg weight saving per vehicle, or 22% lower on the component overall. Based on 80,000 units sold, the reduction of C02 emissions over the 10 years in fleet circulation, at an average of 10,000km per year, could be as much as 7,500 tonnes.

Plastic Free World Conference & Expo 2019 will take place from Thursday 27 June to Friday 28 June, at the Kap Europa, Frankfurt Messe, Frankfurt, Germany.
